The Jigawa State Police Command has apprehended 14 suspects in connection with the circulation of counterfeit currency in the state.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Lawan Shiisu, confirmed the arrests in a statement released on Friday in Dutse, the state capital. He said the suspects were arrested during a joint security operation on Thursday in Digawa village, Birnin Kudu Local Government Area.
According to Shiisu, the arrests followed a coordinated, intelligence-led raid based on credible reports about a syndicate allegedly engaged in fraudulent practices and other criminal activities in the region.
“During the early morning operation, security operatives stormed a criminal hideout and apprehended 14 male suspects,” Shiisu stated. “The team also recovered several incriminating items, including nine fabricated pistols, seven dane guns, four motorcycles, 12 counterfeit US dollar notes, 188 suspected fake Central African currency notes, charms, and a bow and arrow.”
He added that the suspects are currently in police custody and undergoing thorough investigation. They will be charged to court upon conclusion of the investigation.
Shiisu also disclosed that the same group of suspects had, a day before the operation, allegedly attacked Dumus village for refusing to support their fraudulent activities. The attack resulted in the death of one villager, Isma’il Ibrahim, and left eight others injured.
“This operation highlights our unrelenting efforts to protect communities and eliminate criminal networks,” Shiisu said. He urged the public to continue supporting security agencies by promptly reporting suspicious activities.
