The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has apprehended five suspected cultists and recovered firearms during a raid in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area.
In a statement released on Thursday in Uyo, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, confirmed the arrests, which occurred on Wednesday at the suspects’ hideout in Ikot Etuk village.
According to DSP John, the operation followed credible intelligence received by the command. During the raid, officers recovered one locally made pistol, a fabricated single-barrel gun, and various charms believed to be used in criminal activities.
The suspects have reportedly made voluntary confessions and provided valuable information to investigators. Among their revelations was their involvement in a recent attack on Fulani herdsmen, which resulted in the killing of two cows. The stolen livestock, according to the police, were allegedly shared among different cult groups operating within Ibesikpo Asutan.
Efforts are currently underway to track down other fleeing members of the gang and recover additional weapons.
DSP John assured that further updates will be shared with the public as investigations progress.
