The Edo State Police Command has apprehended three suspected kidnappers just six days after they allegedly collected a ₦10 million ransom to secure the release of their victims.
According to a statement from the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu, the suspects—Adamu Usman, Iliyasu Abubakar, and Safiyanu Mohammed—were arrested following an investigation into the abduction of Sunday Ajibola and his mother-in-law.
Yamu revealed that during a preliminary probe, a SIM card recovered from the suspects was traced to Ajibola, a resident of Igbirra Camp in Auchi. Upon being contacted and invited to the police station, Ajibola identified the suspects as members of the eight-man gang that had kidnapped him and his mother-in-law on March 11, 2025. Their families were forced to pay a ₦10 million ransom for their release.
The breakthrough arrest occurred on March 16, 2025, when operatives from the Auchi Division, in collaboration with local vigilantes, conducted a routine stop-and-search operation at UBA Junction in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area. Adamu Usman, a resident of Hausa Quarters, was arrested after a group of young men fled upon sighting the police. His accomplices managed to escape but were later apprehended during the investigation.
A search of the suspects yielded ₦1,345,100 in cash—believed to be ransom proceeds—along with five micro SIM cards, a machete, a dagger, two mobile phones, and a pack of cigarettes.
The police say further investigations are ongoing to track down other members of the gang.
