Operatives of the Rivers State Police Command on Monday morning fired teargas to disperse a group of protesters gathered at Isaac Boro Park in Port Harcourt.
The protest, organized by the Take It Back Movement, was staged in opposition to the reported declaration of an emergency rule in Rivers State.
Witnesses said the protesters had assembled at the park as early as 9:00 am when security operatives arrived and began dispersing the crowd.
Despite a heavy police presence, members of the group remained defiant. “Nobody can tell us where not to gather, we are Rivers people,” some of the young demonstrators were heard shouting, according to a report by Channels TV.
Prior to the protest, the Nigeria Police Force had issued an advisory, urging the organizers to call off the demonstration.
