The Abia State Police Command has launched an investigation into a violent clash at De Latinos Concept Limited, a popular entertainment center in Umuahia, following allegations of police invasion, destruction of property, and assault on staff and customers.
The Chief Executive Officer of De Latinos, Mr. Emmanuel Okenini, claims that music equipment worth ₦150 million was destroyed when police officers allegedly stormed the premises on Sunday. He further alleged that some of his staff and patrons sustained injuries during the incident.
According to accounts from De Latinos’ management, the altercation began when a police officer in civilian attire attempted to enter the club with a wrap of suya he purchased elsewhere. The officer was reportedly stopped by the establishment’s security personnel in line with company policy prohibiting outside food. An argument ensued when the officer insisted on eating inside the premises, leading to a confrontation with the staff.
The situation escalated when the officer allegedly made a call, summoning colleagues who arrived at the venue and fired tear gas, causing panic among customers. Many were forced to flee, with some sustaining injuries, while live music equipment was reportedly damaged in the chaos.
Reacting to the incident, Abia State Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, visited the scene on Monday. His visit was confirmed by the state police spokesperson, DSP Maureen Chinaka, who stated that both De Latinos staff and the police officers involved have been taken to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Umuahia, for questioning.
DSP Chinaka assured the public that investigations were ongoing and that updates would be provided in due course. Meanwhile, De Latinos’ CEO, Emmanuel Okenini, maintains that his primary demand is justice.
