Operatives of the Delta State Police Command have arrested a notorious kidnap kingpin, Abubakar Usman, also known as Shehu, during a sting operation that led to the death of four members of his gang.
The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, announced the breakthrough in a statement released on Monday. He said the arrest followed a well-coordinated operation on Thursday, April 10, based on credible intelligence about the activities of a deadly kidnapping syndicate in the state.
“On April 10, 2025, police operatives attached to the Delta State Command apprehended one Abubakar Usman, alias Shehu, identified as the leader of a notorious kidnapping gang,” Adejobi stated.
During interrogation, Usman reportedly confessed to orchestrating multiple high-profile abductions. These include the kidnapping of a medical doctor in Issele-Uku, the abduction and murder of Mr. Godwin Anuka’s wife and daughter in Ogwashi-Uku, and the killing of Ms. Esther Ojoh in Ibusa.
Usman later led officers to the gang’s hideout in a forest along the Asaba/Agbor Expressway. Upon arrival, the operatives came under heavy gunfire from gang members, prompting a fierce shootout that left four suspects dead.
“In the ensuing gun duel, our operatives neutralized four gang members. We also recovered three AK-47 rifles and 90 rounds of live ammunition from the scene,” Adejobi said.
In a separate operation in Kano State, police arrested three suspects—Abdul Sadiq (43), Ahmad Muazu (22), and Aliyu Sharif (40)—at Dorayi Babba. Acting on a tip-off, officers recovered 15 locally made revolver rifles, 102 live cartridges, and six expended shells.
Investigations are ongoing to uncover the source of the arms and apprehend more suspects linked to the illegal operation.
Commending the officers for their courage, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, reiterated the Force’s commitment to fighting violent crime.
“Our commitment to protecting the lives and property of Nigerians remains resolute. These successes underscore our determination to rid the nation of criminal elements,” the IGP said.
