The Vatican has announced that the body of Pope Francis will be transferred to St. Peter’s Basilica at 9:00 a.m. (0700 GMT) on Wednesday, where it will lie in state for public viewing.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Vatican said the late pontiff is currently resting in a coffin in the chapel of the Santa Marta residence, where he resided throughout his 12-year papacy.
Pope Francis passed away on Monday at the age of 88, following complications from pneumonia and a stroke. According to Vatican sources, he had been hospitalized for five weeks earlier this year with double pneumonia. He reportedly fell into a coma after suffering a stroke and ultimately succumbed to “irreversible cardiocirculatory collapse.”
Meanwhile, senior cardinals are set to convene on Tuesday to plan the funeral arrangements. The ceremony is expected to draw world leaders and dignitaries, ahead of a conclave scheduled for next month to elect a new head of the Roman Catholic Church.
