A presidential aide, Bayo Onanuga, has criticized former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, accusing him of making sensational statements for public attention.
Onanuga’s reaction follows Obi’s claim that democracy in Nigeria has collapsed, a statement the former Anambra governor made while condemning the state of emergency declared in Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking in Abuja, Obi recalled how the presidency had intervened in a past impeachment attempt against him as governor, contrasting it with the current political situation.
In response, Onanuga argued that Nigeria’s democracy has only grown stronger over the past 26 years. He insisted that if democracy had truly collapsed, Obi would not have been able to openly express his views.
Posting on X, Onanuga wrote:
“I listened multiple times to former Governor Peter Obi’s statement in this clip, where he claims that democracy has collapsed in Nigeria. His hyperbolic remarks, suited for headlines, lack deep reflection and a solid logical foundation.
“Only a discontented and disgruntled Peter, who benefits from the very free speech democracy provides, could perceive such a democratic downfall through his lens. If democracy had indeed collapsed, as Peter claims, he would not have been able to make his comments on Monday.
“I urge him to be more cautious with his words and refrain from playing to the gallery.”
