The Leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele, has warned President Bola Tinubu to reconsider the proposed creation of additional states in Nigeria, cautioning that it could lead to serious problems, including the country’s disintegration.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by his media aide, Osho Oluwatosin, Ayodele criticized the plan to establish 30 new states, arguing that it would bring more hardship to Nigerians rather than fostering development.
According to the cleric, unless properly planned, the addition of more states would only worsen Nigeria’s challenges.
“The creation of more states will not bring prosperity to the country but will instead cause suffering. If not carefully structured, it will result in more problems rather than solutions,” he warned.
He added that while Lagos State may benefit from new discoveries of resources, not all regions in the country have the economic strength to sustain additional states.
“I have previously said that Lagos could be split into four states, and it would thrive because it has the resources. But creating over 30 states nationwide is excessive and will lead to severe economic difficulties,” Ayodele said.
The cleric further warned that the addition of 30 new states could lead to the total collapse of some existing ones, as many do not have the financial or structural capacity to sustain such divisions.
“Some states, like Edo, Delta, and Osun, which are already struggling, will be completely destabilized if they are divided further. The government should think carefully before proceeding because some states will never recover from this decision,” he cautioned.
Primate Ayodele urged President Tinubu not to allow political motives to drive the decision on state creation, as doing so could have long-term negative consequences.

The cleric’s remarks come amid ongoing debates over the restructuring of Nigeria’s administrative divisions and the feasibility of creating additional states.
