Presidency officials have revealed that the dismissal of Mele Kyari, former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), along with the state-owned firm’s board, was due to concerns over their performance.
According to sources within the presidency, who spoke on condition of anonymity, President Bola Tinubu’s decision to remove Kyari, board chairman Pius Akinyelure, and other board members was aimed at improving the company’s efficiency.
On Wednesday, Tinubu appointed Bayo Ojulari as Kyari’s replacement and reconstituted the NNPCL board, a move that has sparked reactions from various quarters. The Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists has expressed support for the president’s decision.
While initial reports did not specify the reasons for the shake-up, multiple presidency officials have now confirmed that it was performance-related.
“President Tinubu made this decision because of their performance. We needed a fresh approach. The previous leadership was not making the expected progress, and some of them had become part of the problem,” a source stated.
Another official clarified that the decision was not based on Kyari’s age, emphasizing that NNPCL operates as a limited liability company and is not bound by civil service regulations.
“This is not about age. The company needs fresh perspectives to drive it in a new direction. The president has a clear mandate, and this change aligns with his vision,” the source added.
