Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over the escalating insecurity in Borno State, describing the situation in Marte Local Government Area as a national emergency that demands immediate federal intervention.
In a statement posted on his X handle, Obi highlighted the gravity of the security threat in the region, emphasizing that the crisis goes beyond local issues and poses a serious challenge to national unity and safety.
He commended Governor Babagana Zulum for his proactive leadership, noting that the governor’s decision to spend the night in the embattled area reflects true commitment and courage.
“Governor Zulum, by choosing to stay in a town under threat, has shown what leadership should look like—present, proactive, and people-centred. His courage should serve as a wake-up call for those in authority to take decisive action,” Obi wrote.
The former Anambra governor warned that over 300 communities are currently vulnerable, while more than 20,000 residents have been displaced by the resurgence of insurgent activities.
He cited Governor Zulum’s concerns about the regrouping of insurgents around Lake Chad and the Mandara Hills and the imminent fall of Marte if urgent measures are not taken.
“We cannot keep delaying responses or governing from a distance. Our security forces need reinforcements, and displaced citizens need protection—not promises,” Obi stated.
Calling on the federal government to take swift and sincere action, Obi reiterated that the issue is not political but humanitarian.
“This is about people, about safeguarding the soul of our nation. If we fail to protect Borno, we fail the idea of Nigeria itself,” he said.
Obi concluded by urging leaders at all levels to act with compassion, competence, and courage, affirming that “a new Nigeria is possible.”
