The Opposition Coalition in the National Assembly has debunked claims of a Supreme Court judgment against Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, dismissing the speculation as misleading.
The coalition also reaffirmed that Hon. Oko Jumbo remains the legitimate Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, contrary to reports suggesting otherwise.
Addressing journalists in Abuja, Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere clarified that the Supreme Court ruling in question was actually in favor of Governor Fubara. He explained that the governor voluntarily withdrew his appeal regarding the 2024 budget, a decision that had no real impact since the budget had already been fully implemented.
“Governor Fubara did not lose any case at the Supreme Court,” Ugochinyere stated. “He withdrew his appeal over the 2024 budget because it has already expired and been fully executed. The Supreme Court merely struck it out”.
Ugochinyere dismissed claims that pro-Nyesom Wike lawmakers had received a favorable judgment, stating that their celebrations were misguided.
“The sacked, disgruntled Martin Amaewhule and his pro-Wike group are jubilating out of ignorance. The Supreme Court judgment was simply a procedural outcome of Governor Fubara’s withdrawal, not a victory for them,” he asserted.
He further stressed that Speaker Oko Jumbo remains in control of the Rivers State legislature, urging the public to ignore political propaganda.
“Hon. Oko Jumbo is still the legitimate Speaker. The pro-Wike sacked lawmakers and their leader, Amaewhule, remain removed from office,” he reiterated
Ugochinyere urged the media to ensure truthful and responsible reporting, particularly on legal matters, to prevent the spread of misinformation.
He also encouraged Governor Fubara to remain focused on delivering good governance and development projects to the people of Rivers State, rather than being distracted by political controversies.
“The people of Rivers State deserve development, not political distractions. We must remain focused on governance,” he concluded.
