A professional group from Akwa Ibom, Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District Professionals, has criticized former Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki over his remarks on Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s handling of due process concerns in the Senate.
Saraki had called for an open and transparent investigation into the sexual harassment allegations leveled against Akpabio by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central. However, in a statement signed by its National President, Edidiong John, and National Secretary, Kemfon Neke, the group accused Saraki of attempting to undermine the Senate’s authority and politicize the issue.
The group emphasized that the matter is already before the court, as both Akpabio’s wife, Unoma, and Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan have initiated legal proceedings. It urged Saraki to respect the judicial process and avoid making statements that could interfere with the case.
“Saraki, as a former Senate President, should understand that the Senate cannot conduct a parallel investigation while the case is in court,” the statement read. “This is not about politicization or trivialization but about adhering to legal and parliamentary norms.”
The group also questioned the manner in which the allegations surfaced, noting that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan did not immediately report the incident to the police or the Senate Ethics Committee but instead aired her grievances on television.
Meanwhile, the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions, led by Senator Neda Imasuen, is currently reviewing a petition filed by Akpoti-Uduaghan. The committee will determine whether the Senate has jurisdiction to act on the matter, considering its sub judice status.
The group warned against external interference, stating that any agitation outside the established legal and parliamentary procedures could undermine the integrity of the process.
