Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has criticized Senate President Godswill Akpabio for allegedly politicizing concerns over due process in the National Assembly’s Red Chamber.
Saraki’s remarks came in response to Akpabio’s claim that recent demands for accountability—following allegations made by Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan—were part of a plot to remove him from office.
In a statement released through his media office and shared on his X account, Saraki refuted Akpabio’s claims, saying:
“The Abubakar Bukola Saraki Media Office has noted the remarks made by Senate President Godswill Akpabio while speaking to leaders of certain ‘youth ethnic groups’ on Friday, claiming that individuals from Kwara and Adamawa states are seeking his removal because of his Niger Delta background.”
Saraki clarified that he had never called for Akpabio’s resignation. Instead, he urged a thorough investigation into Akpoti-Uduaghan’s allegations to ensure transparency and protect the Senate’s integrity.
“Dr. Saraki did not demand the Senate President’s resignation. He only stressed that perception is reality and that the allegations from the Kogi Central senator must be addressed in a way that does not suggest an attempt to cover up issues of sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and abuse of power,” the statement read.
Saraki maintained that his stance was driven by the need to safeguard the credibility of the Senate, not by personal or political motives.
“This is not an issue Akpabio should exploit for ethnic sentiments, political divisions, or regional biases. Such actions will not serve his interests or the institution he leads. He must confront the situation responsibly,” Saraki stated.
He further emphasized that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s allegations resonate deeply with women across the country and should be treated with utmost seriousness.
“When issues like sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and the mistreatment of women arise, they highlight the struggles that many women in our society face daily.
“Addressing these concerns transparently in the Senate is an opportunity to ensure that justice is not only done but is also seen to be done,” the statement concluded.
