A deadly overnight attack by suspected herdsmen has left several people feared dead and many others injured in Mtsewnem, Akondutyough village, located in the North Bank area of Makurdi, the Benue State capital.
According to eyewitness accounts, the assailants stormed the community at approximately 3:00 a.m., launching a surprise assault on residents while they were asleep.
Humanitarian worker and human rights advocate, Ukan Kurugh, condemned the attack, describing it as “deeply disturbing.”
“In the early hours of today, around 3:00 a.m., I received a heartbreaking distress call accompanied by horrifying video footage and photographs of yet another attack believed to have been carried out by herdsmen,” Kurugh stated.
“This tragedy occurred in North Bank, just under a 40-minute drive from Makurdi. These attackers continue to strike with impunity, undeterred by the presence of both state and federal security forces. They appear to operate beyond the reach of the President, the Governor, and our entire security system.
“To the wounded and to families who lost loved ones, I mourn with you. Your pain is our collective pain. We will not remain silent—we will continue to speak out, grieve, and demand justice,” he added.
Attempts to reach the spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, SP Edet Udeme, were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
