Detained Biafra separatist leader, Simon Ekpa, has denied any involvement in recent killings in South-East Nigeria, describing related reports as false and defamatory.
In a statement released by his legal representative, Mr. Jonathan Levy, Ekpa condemned Biafra Radio and other platforms for spreading what he called malicious and unfounded allegations. The statement specifically referred to a March 27, 2025, publication by Biafra Radio titled, “ESN/IPOB Was Never Involved in the Barbarism That Happened in Orsu and Other Communities in Imo and Anambra States—IPOB.”
According to the statement, the publication contained defamatory claims targeting Ekpa and his affiliated group, the United States of Biafra (USB), as well as the Biafra Liberation Army (BLA), which he is linked to.
“The article falsely alleges, either directly or by implication, that Mr. Ekpa, the BLA, and, by extension, USB, are responsible for murder and other violent acts in South-East Nigeria,” the statement read. “These allegations are patently false, unsubstantiated, and defamatory.”
Ekpa’s lawyer stressed that neither the BLA, USB, nor any of their officials have been involved in violence or killings in the region. He accused the publication of failing to carry out due diligence, thereby committing what he described as actionable libel under defamation laws in both the United Kingdom and the United States.
The statement also questioned the credibility of IPOB’s media spokesman, Emma Powerful, claiming his remarks suggest Radio Biafra has been infiltrated. “No true Biafran would falsely accuse an imprisoned leader of such treachery,” it added.
Ekpa’s camp further claimed that the publication has caused severe reputational harm, posed security risks to USB members, and hindered the ongoing political and diplomatic efforts of the Biafran movement. They have demanded an immediate retraction of the article.
Simon Ekpa is currently facing trial in Finland, where he resides, over issues related to his activities and affiliations with pro-Biafra movements.
