Soldiers have allegedly opened fire on peaceful protesters in Abraka, Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State. The demonstrators, comprising indigenes and residents of the community, were protesting the rising cases of kidnapping and killings reportedly carried out by suspected Fulani herdsmen.
At the time of filing this report, no casualties or injuries had been confirmed.
The protest, which began peacefully, saw community members carrying placards with various inscriptions and chanting solidarity songs as they marched along the expressway to voice their grievances.
Eyewitnesses claim that the peaceful demonstration was disrupted when soldiers arrived in about four vans and allegedly began shooting into the air without attempting to engage with the protesters or understand the situation.
Reacting to the incident, human rights activist, Comrade Harrison Gwamnishu, condemned the military’s alleged actions, describing them as unprovoked and unjustified. He called for the safety and protection of the protesters and urged the Delta State Government to urgently address the security concerns raised by the community.
