A first-year student of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Rivers State, is battling for his life after sustaining a gunshot wound at the Faculty of Education on Wednesday.
The student’s identity has not been made public. He was rushed to a hospital, where colleagues were told to raise N300,000 before surgery could begin. His girlfriend, who accompanied him, confirmed he was receiving treatment and required urgent surgery. Course mates have launched an emergency fundraising drive to meet the hospital’s demand.
The incident has heightened anxiety on campus and revived concerns about security, particularly in light of past violent clashes allegedly linked to cult groups.
Details of the shooting remain unclear, and it has not been established whether the attack was cult-related.
In response, university management has suspended all remaining Students’ Union Government (SUG) Week activities with immediate effect. In a notice signed by Registrar Dr. Chinonye Abraham Ajie, students were directed to resume normal lectures on Thursday, August 13. The management warned against any actions that could disrupt academic activities or threaten peace on campus, adding that students who fail to attend classes would be held responsible.
