At least six people have been killed in a fresh attack by suspected armed herdsmen at Tse Ugema Chul, Mbakesa community, Ugbaam in Ukum Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State.
The attack, which occurred on Saturday night, forced many residents to flee the area in fear.
According to a local source who spoke anonymously, seven bodies had been recovered, while several others remained missing.
It was gathered that the attack followed an attempt by local youths to chase away cattle that had strayed into their farmlands and destroyed their yam crops.
“As the youths moved to drive the cattle away, gunmen lying in ambush opened fire on them, killing six. After the attack, the assailants looted farm produce and destroyed property,” the source said.
Among the victims was Michael Adeke, who had recently posted on Facebook about recurring attacks in the area and urged locals to defend themselves.
Confirming the incident, the Chairman of Ukum LGA, Jonathan Modi, expressed his distress but declined further comments.
When contacted, the spokesperson of the Benue State Police Command, CSP Catherine Anene, stated that she had yet to receive a briefing on the incident.
