A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State, Auwal Dankano, has called on the state government to suspend its overseas scholarship programs and redirect the funds to support local tertiary institutions.
Dankano made the appeal while reacting to the recent hike in registration fees at Northwest University, Kano, where students now pay nearly ₦53,000—up from the previous ₦19,000.
He attributed the sharp increase to the university’s ongoing financial challenges, which he said contradicts the state’s policy on free and accessible education.
“Yes, we are all aware that the management unofficially complained about a shortage of funds to run the university, hence the fee hike,” Dankano said. “To be fair, the school authorities may have valid reasons, but the move does not align with Kano State’s education policy.”
He advised the government to seek alternative ways of supporting higher institutions instead of burdening students and their families.
“In my view, the government should reverse the increase and find other ways to bridge the funding gap,” he suggested.
Dankano further urged the state to suspend foreign scholarships and instead invest the funds in local institutions such as Northwest University and Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education.
“The government should halt overseas scholarship programs and redirect that money to our two state-owned universities,” he stated.
According to him, both institutions have an estimated 10,000 students each from Kano State. He estimated that the government would need about ₦1.5 billion annually to adequately fund them.
“With an estimated 10,000 Kano indigenes in each of the universities, the state government will require around ₦1.5 billion yearly to meet their financial needs. That would go a long way in achieving inclusive and sustainable education,” he added.
