A petrol tanker explosion in Ibadan, Oyo State, has claimed the lives of the driver and his apprentice.
The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday near Total Filling Station at Orita Challenge. Reports indicate that the tanker, loaded with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, exploded following a brake failure.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver lost control while attempting to navigate a roundabout, causing the tanker to hit a concrete structure, somersault, and burst into flames.
Confirming the incident, the General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, Mr. Yemi Akinyinka, stated that emergency responders received the distress call at exactly 5:01 AM. A firefighting team, led by Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent (ACFS) Olubunmi Christy, was immediately deployed to the scene.
“Upon arrival, we found a fallen petrol tanker in front of a filling station. Our team quickly swung into action, using a foam chemical compound to contain the fire. The driver and the apprentice were found burnt and their bodies were handed over to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for transport to the hospital,” Akinyinka said.
He added that firefighters from Sumal Food Limited also assisted in controlling the blaze, while fire personnel remained on-site for cooling operations to prevent further outbreaks.
Authorities have urged motorists, especially tanker drivers, to ensure proper vehicle maintenance to prevent similar accidents.
