The Chief of Mutumbiyu, Alhaji Sulaiman Muhammed, has cautioned fishermen in Gassol Local Government Area of Taraba State against the use of harmful chemicals and explosives for fishing, describing the practice as both illegal and environmentally destructive.
The monarch issued the warning at his palace in Mutumbiyu following the turbanning of Alhaji Bala Jambari as Sarkin Tarun (Leader of Fishermen) and Alhaji Tukura Julde as Danrimin Mutumbiyu.
He lamented the impact of these harmful methods on aquatic life, noting that fish populations have significantly declined and some species have gone extinct, threatening the livelihoods of many who depend on fishing.
“Fish populations have drastically reduced, and many species are now extinct. Those who depend on fishing for their livelihoods are suffering. This is largely due to the use of chemicals and explosives,” the monarch stated.
Alhaji Sulaiman also reminded fishermen that environmental protection laws in Taraba State strictly prohibit such practices, and he pledged that his traditional council would work closely with relevant authorities to ensure compliance and enforcement.
He charged the newly appointed Sarkin Tarun with the duty of overseeing fishing activities and sensitizing his members on the dangers of illegal fishing.
“Your role as leader of fishermen comes with great responsibility. You must ensure that your members do not engage in practices that destroy our aquatic ecosystem,” he emphasized.
The monarch also appealed to residents to remain peaceful and report any suspicious activities to security agencies, stressing the importance of community vigilance in protecting the environment and maintaining public safety.
