Owerri — Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma has underscored technology and skills development as critical drivers of Nigeria’s economic prosperity, urging the nation to fully embrace innovation to compete effectively in the global economy.
Governor Uzodimma made the remarks on Monday during the commissioning of a new Skill Acquisition Centre in Owerri North Local Government Area. The facility, established by the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) in partnership with Senator Ezenwa Onyewuchi, representing Imo East Senatorial District, aims to equip young Nigerians with practical, technology-oriented vocational skills.
“The centre will prepare our youths for the realities of the Fourth Industrial Revolution,” Uzodimma said. He described skills acquisition as one of the most potent weapons against unemployment and a foundation for sustainable economic growth.
Drawing on a popular proverb, the governor added: “This is not about giving people fish; it is about teaching them how to fish.” He called for the provision of start-up capital to graduates of the centre to help them launch businesses, achieve self-reliance, and generate employment for others.
Uzodimma commended President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for prioritising technology, innovation, and human capital development. He praised NASENI for its ongoing efforts to empower Nigerians and urged the host community and relevant authorities to protect the new facility from vandalism, describing public infrastructure as vital investments for current and future generations.
Senator Ezenwa Onyewuchi, who facilitated the project, echoed the governor’s sentiments, stating that the centre was designed to foster self-reliance, entrepreneurship, and wealth creation among youths in his constituency.
“Our goal is to teach our people how to fish, not just give them fish,” Onyewuchi said. He noted that beneficiaries would receive support to establish small-scale enterprises after their training, with the facility equipped with modern tools for quality technical and vocational education.
The senator also lauded President Tinubu for strengthening NASENI’s mandate and thanked Governor Uzodimma for his support in bringing the project to Imo State. He expressed confidence that the centre would complement his broader constituency development efforts and deliver lasting economic opportunities for young people.
The commissioning ceremony drew senior government officials from federal, state, and local levels, as well as stakeholders from the business community.
The initiative reflects a growing national push to leverage science, technology, and engineering infrastructure to tackle youth unemployment and drive inclusive economic growth.
