There is growing tension at the National Assembly as Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan gains the backing of protesters and a court order to stop her probe by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions. The probe follows her recent clash with Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
On Wednesday, pro-Natasha protesters gathered at the National Assembly gate as early as 8:00 a.m. ahead of the Senate’s plenary session. However, security operatives used tear gas to disperse the crowd, preventing them from accessing the complex.
The protest comes after a Federal High Court in Abuja issued an interim order stopping the Senate committee from investigating Akpoti-Uduaghan. Justice Obiora Egwuatu granted the order on Tuesday after an ex parte application was filed by her legal team.
The dispute stems from a heated altercation between Akpoti-Uduaghan and Akpabio over seating arrangements on February 25, 2025. Following the clash, she was referred to the Senate’s disciplinary panel. In response, Akpoti-Uduaghan filed a N100 billion defamation lawsuit against Akpabio.
Last Friday, she further alleged that Akpabio was targeting her because she rejected his sexual advances. However, Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu dismissed the claims, stating that no formal petition has been received against the Senate President.
Despite the court order, Akpoti-Uduaghan was invited to appear before the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
