It was my learned brother and Human Rights Activist, Dele Farotimi, who first called our attention to the fact that citizens should not waste their energy fighting for the average Nigerian politician. Though Nigerians are people moved by emotions and sentiments rather than logic and common sense, we tend to support the weaker person or the weaker side whenever two politicians are fighting in the marketplace.
Several people today are supporting Natasha because of their hatred and dislike for God’s-will Akpabio, not because they love Natasha. To them, anything that will bring the Senate President down is a welcome development, even if it means supporting another evil to achieve that goal.
Recently, we heard about the rumour of the collapse of the FCT Minister and how Nigerians celebrated the unfortunate situation of a fellow human being. This points to the fact that most of us are not lovers of God. Christ Himself admonished Christians to pray for their enemies. Most of us have what I refer to as a “bitter kola heart.” We celebrate the downfall of others, so long as they belong to the other class, the “we” and “them” mentality syndrome.
I challenge anyone to show me any Nigerian politician (outside a few persons like Peter Obi) that do not rig elections, buy votes or even rent crowds, they all manipulate the system to achieve personal goals.
When things are going well, they together enjoy the wealth, however, when the situation falls apart, they recruit gullible citizens to join in their war. When Natasha was enjoying the privileges in the senate, Nigerians were looking for food to eat. As a first-timer in the house she was made chair of Juicy committees like Local Content and Diaspora, when she was flying with the Senate President on almost all foreign trips, Nigerians were nowhere in the picture, when they were making sweet mid-night calls, when funds were transferred or prayers sent to the mailboxes, Nigerians were busy looking for money to purchase petro to fuel their automobiles. Now, the milk has changed colour, suddenly they are on the street recruiting innocent, ignorant, and poor Nigerians to gather signatures for recall and rent crowds to counter the recall process.
Interestingly, when they make up to continue sharing the funds, the citizens will be back to their previous condition. Logically, if most Nigerians remove their hatred for the Senate President, they will clearly appreciate that Senator Natasha isn’t someone who plays by the rules or respects constituted authorities, she looks like a strategic master of blackmail and this can be verified through her personal history which is now in the public domain.
This is not however, to say that the Senate President is a person of moral character, he is not even pretentious of his capacity to be on the left side, hence, they should be allowed to fight their fight, not side any of them, we cannot all be foolish at the same time all the time. Politicians are smart people and they are free-minded persons who will eventually come together for another common interest of shortchanging the system.
