President Bola Tinubu has blamed Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, for the recent pipeline explosion in the state, citing his alleged failure to address security threats and political instability.
In a nationwide broadcast on Tuesday, Tinubu expressed concerns over the ongoing political crisis in Rivers, accusing Fubara of demolishing the State Assembly complex and leaving it in ruins for over 15 months. He criticized the governor for dismantling the legislative arm of government, despite interventions from the presidency and other stakeholders to restore peace.
Referring to recent security reports, Tinubu linked the governor’s inaction to increasing incidents of pipeline vandalism by militants. He stated, “Between yesterday and today, there have been disturbing reports of pipeline vandalism, yet the governor has taken no action to stop it.” He assured Nigerians that security agencies had been ordered to protect the people and critical infrastructure in the state.
Declaring a state of emergency in Rivers, Tinubu said the deteriorating security and governance situation required urgent intervention. As part of his measures, he appointed Retired Vice-Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas to take over administrative functions in the state.
