President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday held a private meeting with several governors from the All Progressives Congress and a few others from different parties at the State House in Abuja. The purpose of the gathering was not disclosed, and officials kept details away from the press as at the time of filing this report.
Information gathered indicates that the governors of Kebbi and Sokoto were the first to arrive, before being joined by others, including those from the southern region.
Among the governors present were Umar Namadi of Jigawa, Monday Okpebholo of Edo, Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti, Usman Ododo of Kogi, Aliyu Sokoto of Sokoto, Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo, and Nasir Idris of Kebbi.
The meeting, which lasted close to two hours, held in the President’s office. Although there was no official briefing from the Presidency, the development comes at a time when the nation is battling rising security concerns in several states. It also coincides with ongoing political consultations ahead of major national and party events.
The governors declined to comment when approached by journalists.
In a separate development, President Tinubu also met behind closed doors with Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State and Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State.
The meeting with Governor Fubara took place amid growing political tension in Rivers, following the recent defection of seventeen members of the State House of Assembly from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress. The lawmakers, loyal to Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike and led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, have shifted the legislative power structure in the state, leaving only three lawmakers still aligned with the Rivers governor.
Governor Fubara arrived at about 5:01p.m. and left around 5:45p.m. without revealing any details of his discussion with the President.
Minutes earlier, Governor Nwifuru had also met the President privately. Although the agenda was not disclosed, the Ebonyi governor has held multiple consultations with the Presidency recently, mainly on infrastructure development and security collaboration in the Southeast.
