President Bola Tinubu has urged the Nigerian judiciary to deliver swift, impartial justice that remains blind to litigants’ status, tribe, or wealth, warning that a compromised legal system endangers democratic stability.
The President, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, made the call on Monday during the inauguration of the Court of Appeal, Abuja Division’s new building complex in Dakibiyu.
Speaking at the event, Tinubu described the state-of-the-art facility as a key component of his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda and a demonstration of commitment to strengthening the rule of law. He stressed that the judiciary must serve as the last hope for the ordinary Nigerian.
“To My Lords Justices, as you move into this complex, Nigeria asks one thing of you: let justice be swift. Let it be fair. Let it be blind to status, tribe, or purse. Let the common man feel that this Court is truly his last hope,” the President said.
Tinubu noted that the Abuja Division had operated for too long from cramped, temporary facilities, describing the situation as unacceptable for a nation that values justice. He commended FCT Minister Nyesom Wike for the timely completion of the project, which began in July 2024 after the President’s directive.
“You took the assignment to deliver this project in May 2024. By July, contractors were on site. You promised 16 months. You delivered in record time. No excuses. No variation. Just results,” Tinubu said, praising Wike’s dedication.
The new complex features two large courtrooms and eight smaller ones, designed to accelerate case resolution, reduce congestion in correctional facilities, and enhance access to justice, particularly for high-profile matters such as election petitions and constitutional cases.
President Tinubu further highlighted ongoing judicial reforms, including increased funding, digitization of court processes, and construction of judges’ residences across the FCT. He said the initiative reflects his administration’s broader efforts to restore the dignity of national institutions.
Court of Appeal President, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, welcomed the development, noting that the division previously operated with only two courtrooms, which had hindered timely justice delivery. She expressed confidence that the new infrastructure would significantly improve the pace of adjudication.
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike disclosed that the President approved interventions not only for the Court of Appeal but also for the National Industrial Court, Federal High Court, and Code of Conduct Tribunal. He emphasized that judicial independence requires adequate working environments and residences for judges.
Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), described the building as both a 50th-anniversary gift to the judiciary and a reflection of the Tinubu administration’s substantial support for the sector — unmatched by recent governments.
Minister of State for the FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure, said the project underscores the Federal Government’s determination to make the justice system more efficient and responsive to Nigerians’ needs.
