Troops of the 3 Division under Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) have successfully rescued 16 kidnapped passengers along the Jos–Mangu highway in Plateau State.
According to a statement released on Monday by the Media Information Officer of Operation Safe Haven, Major Samson Zhakom, the rescue operation was triggered around 9 p.m. on April 13, 2025, when troops conducting Operation Lafiyan Jama’a discovered an abandoned vehicle by the roadside at Mararaban Kantoma in Mangu Local Government Area.
Suspecting foul play, the troops launched an immediate search of the surrounding bushes, where they encountered the kidnappers. Upon sighting the soldiers, the criminals opened fire, but were quickly overpowered by the troops’ superior firepower, forcing them to flee and abandon their victims.
“All 16 abducted passengers, including six children, were rescued during the operation,” Zhakom confirmed. “Some of the victims who sustained minor injuries received immediate first aid from the troops.”
The rescued passengers were later escorted to safety and continued their journey to Jos Metropolis.
Meanwhile, Major Zhakom added that the troops are continuing search operations to apprehend the fleeing kidnappers, some of whom are believed to have sustained gunshot wounds during the encounter.
