Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has accused U.S. President Donald Trump of deliberately trying to trigger the total collapse of Canada’s economy through newly imposed tariffs.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Trudeau claimed the tariffs were part of a broader U.S. strategy to weaken Canada for a potential takeover.
“Even the excuse he is giving today for these tariffs, fentanyl is completely bogus. Completely unjustified,” Trudeau stated.
“We actually have to fall back on the one thing he has said repeatedly, that what he wants is to see a total collapse of the Canadian economy,” he continued. “Because that will make it easier to annex us. That’s never going to happen.”
Trudeau’s remarks referenced Trump’s past comments about Canada, including calling him the “governor” of the country and referring to Canada as the U.S.A’s 51st state.
On Tuesday morning, the U.S. imposed a 25% tariff on most Canadian imports, while energy products faced a reduced 10% tariff to help keep gas prices stable.
