Former U.S. President Donald Trump has reiterated his claim that Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 “would never have happened” if he were in office.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday evening, Trump highlighted the ongoing devastation in Ukraine, stating that hundreds of people had died in various cities over the past week.
The war began in February 2022 when Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale military operation in Ukraine. At the time, Joe Biden was serving as U.S. president.
When asked whether he would consider lifting the intelligence pause on Ukraine, Trump responded, “We want to do anything we can to get Ukraine to be serious about getting something done. I think right now they haven’t, but they will be, and I think it’s going to become evident over the next two or three days.”
Trump also emphasized the urgency of stopping the ongoing conflict, adding, “This week, hundreds of people died in cities in Ukraine, and we’ve got to get it stopped. It would have never happened if I was president.”
His comments come amid his recent decision to pause all military aid to Ukraine as the war with Russia continues.
