Former U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that European countries remain uncertain about how to bring an end to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, now in its third year.
Speaking at the White House on Friday, Trump warned that without a resolution, the conflict could escalate into “World War III.” When asked why no European nation had proposed a peace deal without U.S. involvement, he asserted that he alone could end the war.
“They’re in a very unusual position; they don’t know how to end the war,” Trump said. “I think I do know how to end the war.”
Despite past tensions over what he called the “Russia hoax,” Trump maintained that he has a strong relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He suggested that Putin is open to ending the war and could be “more generous than he has to be,” which, according to Trump, would be a positive outcome.
Trump also argued that if the war had never started, a “good deal” could have been reached without Ukraine making territorial concessions. He acknowledged challenges in dealing with Ukraine, stating, “They don’t have the cards,” but suggested negotiations with Russia could be “easier with the cards.”
Meanwhile, the European Union announced on Thursday that Ukraine would receive $33 billion in new aid, sourced from frozen Russian assets, according to French President Emmanuel Macron.
