US President Donald Trump has declared that Washington does not require China’s assistance to resolve the ongoing conflict with Iran, despite rising tensions around the Strait of Hormuz and growing fears over global oil supply disruptions.
Speaking ahead of a planned summit in Beijing on Tuesday, Trump said the United States would prevail in the standoff with Iran “one way or the other,” whether through diplomacy or force.
“I don’t think we need any help with Iran. We’ll win it one way or the other, peacefully or otherwise,” he told reporters.
His remarks came as hopes for a wider peace agreement appeared to diminish more than a month after a fragile ceasefire between both sides was reached.
Reports also indicated that Iran has tightened its grip on the Strait of Hormuz through new energy shipping arrangements involving Iraq and Pakistan. The waterway remains one of the world’s most critical oil routes, handling roughly one-fifth of global crude supplies.
US officials revealed that Washington and Beijing had earlier agreed that no nation should place restrictions or tolls on maritime traffic in the region.
Trump is expected to hold talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping later this week, with the US hoping China could persuade Tehran to return to negotiations aimed at ending the conflict.
Washington has continued to demand that Iran abandon its nuclear ambitions and relax controls around the strategic strait, while Tehran insists on compensation for war-related damages and an end to US military pressure in the region.
Amid growing economic concerns, Trump brushed aside claims that rising fuel prices and inflation were shaping his stance.
“The only thing that matters, when I’m talking about Iran, they can’t have a nuclear weapon,” he said before leaving the White House.
Meanwhile, oil prices kept climbing due to fears of supply disruptions, with Brent crude rising above $107 per barrel.
The Pentagon also disclosed that the war has now cost an estimated $29 billion, while recent opinion polls show increasing public concern in the United States ahead of November’s midterm elections.
