The Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Nigeria has expressed support for Ushie Uguamaye, also known as Raye, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member who claimed she received threats after criticizing President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
TUC President, Festus Osifo, made this known during an appearance on Sunday Politics on Channels Television, where he urged the government to tolerate criticism instead of targeting individuals expressing their frustrations.
According to Osifo, Raye’s comments reflect the struggles of many Nigerians who are frustrated with the country’s economic situation. He cautioned against persecuting critics, emphasizing that the government should develop resilience and patience in dealing with dissenting voices.
“They [the government] need to understand that people are frustrated, hungry, and tired. If they decide to vent, I strongly believe the government should not take it personally and go after such individuals,” Osifo stated.
He also advised critics to voice their concerns with decorum, while maintaining that a corps member expressing personal frustration poses no real threat to the government.
“Imagine a young lady simply serving her country through NYSC. What power does she have to bring down the government? This is about personal frustration, and she has every right to express it,” he added.
Raye recently went viral after posting a TikTok video under the hashtag #talktoraye, where she lamented Nigeria’s worsening economic conditions. She criticized Tinubu’s leadership, calling him a “terrible leader” and questioning the government’s efforts to ease citizens’ suffering.
Following the video, Raye claimed that NYSC officials pressured her to delete it and even summoned her for questioning. However, the NYSC has yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
Meanwhile, opposition figures, including 2023 presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar (PDP) and Peter Obi (Labour Party), have also expressed their support for Raye.
