A powerful thunderstorm that swept through Obi town in Nasarawa State on Monday has claimed the lives of two residents and left two others critically injured.
The deceased, identified as Aminu Amegwa Ayitogo and Micah Christopher, were reportedly struck by lightning during a torrential downpour. Eyewitnesses said the victims had sought shelter under a motorcycle workshop shed located opposite the Obi Local Government Secretariat when the tragedy occurred.
“The thunderbolt came without warning and hit them directly,” one witness said. “It was a shocking and devastating moment.”
Two others, Bulus Ogu Iwala and Abraham Francis Tarkaa, sustained severe injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the Federal University Teaching Hospital in Lafia. Medical officials say both victims are in critical condition and efforts are ongoing to stabilise them.
In the aftermath of the incident, local authorities have issued a public safety advisory, urging residents to take extra precautions during extreme weather. They specifically warned against seeking shelter under trees, metal structures, or open areas during thunderstorms.
The incident has thrown the Obi community into mourning, with many calling for increased public awareness on lightning safety during the rainy season.
