Tension escalated in Osun State on Monday as clashes between members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led to gunfire, leaving two people feared shot in Boripe Local Government Area.
The crisis erupted following the resumption of reinstated APC council executives, a move that has deepened the ongoing political rift between Governor Ademola Adeleke and the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola. The dispute stems from the recent Court of Appeal ruling reinstating sacked APC executives.
According to reports, APC officials resumed office early in the day, celebrating their return and asserting their authority over the council. However, as they left the premises, they were allegedly ambushed by PDP members, resulting in a violent confrontation that saw gunfire exchanged and two individuals injured.
Security operatives from the Amotekun Corps arrived to restore order but reportedly faced resistance from APC members.
The unrest was not limited to Boripe, as tensions flared in other parts of the state:
In Osogbo, APC members took over the secretariat in Oke-Baale, but PDP supporters, mobilized by Governor Adeleke’s Special Adviser on Political Matters, Muniru Raji, attempted to resist them.
The Secretary to the State Government, Teslim Igbalaye, later led a larger PDP contingent to the council, forcing APC members out amid further gunfire.
In Ife Central, APC members resumed at the council, sparking protests from PDP supporters, which led to heavy traffic congestion along the Ibadan-Ikire Expressway.
Obokun remained tense, with both parties gathering outside a locked council office.
In Irewole, PDP members blocked APC officials from entering the council premises, preventing any attempt to reclaim control.
The former Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Timothy Owoeye, led the reinstatement of APC executives in Ilesa East, while ex-lawmaker Babatunde Komolafe did the same in Atakunmosa West.
In Olorunda, security was heightened at the secretariat’s entrance, where scores of PDP members, led by the Commissioner for Rural Development, Gani Olaoluwa, gathered in protest.
With rising tensions across the state, security forces are on high alert to prevent further escalation of violence.
