Two people died on Tuesday after a plywood-laden truck crashed at Diamond Tank Junction on Creek Road in Apapa, Lagos.
The incident occurred around 2:20 p.m. when the heavy-duty vehicle, which had loaded at Second Gate, attempted a U-turn near the MSC company premises. An eyewitness, Joseph Agha, said officers believed to be from Nigerian Ports Authority security and the Port Police tried to flag the truck down.
Agha claimed that officials routinely demand money from trucks at the junction, with amounts varying by vehicle type. As the driver slowed and tried to respond while steering, the securing belts on the cargo snapped. The load shifted, the driver lost control, and the truck struck a concrete culvert dividing the road. The impact sent the plywood cascading onto the roadway, crushing two people to death.
The driver and his motor boy fled the scene. Lagos State Traffic Management Authority personnel arrived promptly, secured the area, managed the resulting congestion, removed the fallen timber, and towed the truck toward Liverpool Road near Area B for further action.
As of the time of the original report, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki had not issued an official statement on the crash or the alleged demands by security personnel. Authorities have opened an investigation into the exact cause of the fatal accident.
