Okechukwu was reportedly abducted from his residence by suspected bandits on Tuesday night, and his lifeless body was discovered the following day. He served at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Tachiri, Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
Reacting to the tragic incident, the U.S. Mission expressed deep distress over the killing.
“We are distressed by the brutal and senseless killing of Reverend Father Sylvester Okechukwu in Kaduna State, Nigeria. We strongly condemn this horrific act of violence. We extend our deepest condolences to the family, congregation, and community of Father Okechukwu,” the statement read.
Two days after the priest’s death, the Mission urged the Nigerian government to take swift action in identifying and bringing the perpetrators to justice.
