The United Democratic Coalition (UDC) has called on President Bola Tinubu to immediately declare a state of emergency in Zamfara State, citing escalating insecurity and a growing assault on democratic institutions.
In a statement released on Friday, UDC President Abdulrahman Danladi described Zamfara as “a state under siege,” accusing the government of failing to protect its citizens while suppressing opposition voices.
“The situation in Zamfara has moved from troubling to terrifying. Armed groups operate without restraint, residents live in fear of bandits, and those who dare to speak out are being silenced,” the statement read.
Danladi condemned the recent suspension of 10 lawmakers in the Zamfara State House of Assembly, arguing that they were targeted for raising concerns about insecurity and illegal mining in their constituencies.
“What we are witnessing is not just lawlessness but executive tyranny. These lawmakers were elected to represent the people, yet instead of addressing their concerns, the state assembly—clearly acting on orders—has shut them down,” he said.
Drawing parallels with the recent crisis in Rivers State, where Governor Siminalayi Fubara governed with just four lawmakers following a legislative split, Danladi questioned why Zamfara’s crisis had not drawn similar federal attention.
“If Rivers, with four lawmakers, sparked talks of emergency rule, how can Zamfara—with 10 suspended lawmakers and escalating violence—not be a national priority?” he asked. “The same standard must apply. Democracy is being dismantled in Zamfara in broad daylight.”
The UDC urged the federal government to impose a six-month state of emergency in Zamfara, allowing security forces to take control and restore constitutional order. The group also demanded the immediate reinstatement of the suspended lawmakers and an investigation into what it described as “executive interference” in the legislature.
“This is not the time for political correctness but for decisive leadership. The people of Zamfara are under siege—both by bandits and by those meant to protect them,” the statement added.
Zamfara remains one of Nigeria’s most volatile states, with frequent attacks by armed groups, mass displacement, and numerous casualties recorded over the past year.
