The Acting Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Prof. Joseph I. Ikechebelu, has ordered a full investigation into an altercation between a lecturer, Dr. Chukwudi Okoye, and a third-year student, Goddy Mbakwe Precious. The incident, which allegedly involved physical confrontation and assault, has sparked widespread debate, particularly on social media.
In a statement issued by the Acting Head of Information, Public Relations, and Protocol, Njelita Louis, the university reaffirmed its commitment to discipline and fairness.
“The Management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has been made aware of a disturbing incident involving Dr. Chukwudi Okoye, a lecturer in the Department of Theatre Arts and Film Studies, and Goddy Mbakwe Precious, a third-year student in the Department of History and International Studies,” the statement read.
“In line with our core values of discipline, self-reliance, and excellence, and in adherence to the principles of fair hearing, equity, and justice, the Acting Vice-Chancellor has ordered a full-scale, transparent, and unbiased investigation into the matter.”
The university urged all concerned parties and the public to remain calm as it seeks to establish the facts and take appropriate action.
The altercation gained traction on social media after a video surfaced showing the student recording a TikTok video in a university corridor when the lecturer walked past. Dr. Okoye reportedly tapped her on the shoulder to ask her to move, which led to an exchange of words.
According to the lecturer’s account, he overheard the student insulting him and returned to verify if she was one of his students. He then allegedly asked her to delete the video in which he appeared. This escalated into a confrontation, during which he claimed the student bit him multiple times, slapped him, and tore his clothes.
However, in her version of events, Ms. Mbakwe stated that she was unaware Okoye was a lecturer and was shocked when he attempted to grab her phone. She alleged that in the ensuing struggle, he forcefully held her, leaving scratches on her body, which led her to bite him in self-defense.
Both parties have presented conflicting narratives, prompting the university to intervene.
Njelita emphasized that UNIZIK remains committed to upholding discipline and ethical conduct among students and staff.
“There is no place for indiscipline, misconduct, or any form of unacceptable behavior within our community. Further updates will be provided as necessary,” he stated.
The university has assured that appropriate sanctions will be imposed on any party found culpable following the investigation.
