The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that six people lost their lives, and 25 others sustained injuries in a multiple-vehicle crash under the Karu Bridge in Abuja on Wednesday.
According to the FRSC’s Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, the accident involved 18 vehicles, including two articulated trucks, two buses, one jeep, and 11 cars. Some of the vehicles were severely damaged, with a few engulfed in flames.
Emergency responders, including the FRSC, Red Cross, Fire Service, and the military, arrived swiftly to manage the situation and assist victims.
Ogungbemide attributed the crash to brake failure, which triggered a chain reaction of collisions.
“The accident occurred at approximately 6:58 p.m., and the FRSC received the report at 7:03 p.m. A total of 35 people were involved. Six people died, with four victims burned beyond recognition, while 25 others sustained varying degrees of injuries,” he stated.
The injured victims were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment, while the deceased were taken to the mortuary.
FRSC officials, including the FCT Sector Commander, Chorrie Muta’a, and the Unit Commander for Nyanya and Karu, were present at the scene to oversee rescue operations. The Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, also visited to assess the damage and express condolences to the victims’ families.
Ogungbemide urged drivers to ensure proper vehicle maintenance before setting out on any journey, stressing the importance of safety checks to prevent accidents.
“The FRSC remains committed to reducing road crashes through rigorous public sensitization and enforcement of traffic laws. The Corps continues to work with other agencies to enhance road safety awareness and prevent such tragic incidents in the future,” he added.
