Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma has assured Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, that their personal relationship remains intact despite their opposing positions on the forthcoming Osun State governorship election.
In a statement issued Thursday by his Chief Press Secretary and Special Adviser on Media, Oguwike Nwachuku, Uzodimma said political differences would not strain the bond between them. “Davido remains his son,” the statement declared.
The clarification followed Davido’s public appeal for Uzodimma to promote peace and prevent Osun from becoming a political battleground. The singer made the call at a youth mobilisation event supporting his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, who is seeking re-election on the Accord Party platform. The election is scheduled for August 15, 2026.
Uzodimma reminded Davido that he is not an Osun voter and therefore cannot determine the outcome of the poll. He said his involvement stems solely from his role as a committed member of the All Progressives Congress and chairman of the party’s national campaign council for the election. He plans to visit the state to campaign for the APC candidate, Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, and to monitor the process on behalf of the party.
The governor also distanced himself from remarks by Ambrose Nwogwugwu, who had described Davido’s appeal as “emotional blackmail” and advised the singer to direct his message to Osun voters. Uzodimma stated that he neither authorised Nwogwugwu nor anyone else to speak on his behalf. He described Nwogwugwu’s comments as a personal opinion that does not represent his position or that of the APC National Campaign Council.
Uzodimma urged Davido, the people of Osun State and the public to disregard the earlier response, noting that some had begun presenting it as his official stance.
