Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State on Wednesday called on Nigerian journalists to strengthen ethical reporting and actively counter the spread of disinformation in the discharge of their duties.
Addressing the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Triennial Conference in Owerri, the governor also challenged practitioners to use responsible journalism to hold those in authority accountable and to deepen democratic practice.
Uzodimma said responsible journalism remains essential to national development and a healthy democracy. He warned that fake news and disinformation continue to undermine the integrity of the country, individuals and the media itself, describing the trend as a major threat to the profession.
He urged journalists to undergo continuous training to equip them with the skills needed for ethical practice. The governor congratulated the NUJ leadership under Comrade Chris Isiguzo for selecting Imo State as the conference venue and invited participants to assess the state’s development strides for themselves rather than relying on unverified social-media narratives.
In his keynote address themed “Media and Democracy: The Journalist’s Role in Holding Leaders Accountable,” Uzodimma recalled that a free and independent press is the bedrock of democratic governance. He highlighted four core functions of the media: providing reliable information, acting as a watchdog, facilitating democratic discourse, and reflecting society’s diversity.
A strong local press, he added, is particularly effective in ensuring leaders remain responsive to the needs of their constituents.
