The family of the late Gen. Mamman Jiya Vatsa, who was executed in 1986 over an alleged coup plot against then-Head of State Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (IBB), has strongly condemned Babangida’s recently released memoir, describing it as “a collection of distorted facts” and “a good reference material for criminals.”
Speaking to journalists in Minna on Tuesday, Jonathan Vatsa, a cousin of the late General and the family’s spokesperson, expressed outrage over Babangida’s claim that Vatsa’s execution was justified by evidence of his involvement in a coup plot.
General Babangida has long abandoned the path of honor, and his belated autobiography is filled with lies and blackmail,” Vatsa said. “It is not a book for young and upcoming generations to learn from but rather a guide for criminals.”
Vatsa also raised questions about Babangida’s identity, citing his alleged name change from Badamosi to Babangida to align himself with the northern region.
“Northerners don’t bear the name Badamosi; it is synonymous with the South-West,” he stated.
The former Niger State APC publicity secretary further accused Babangida of distorting facts about the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, insisting that the decision was Babangida’s alone, not that of Gen. Sani Abacha.
“How can he claim Abacha annulled the election when he was the one in power as Head of State?” Vatsa questioned.
He lamented that even in death, Babangida had refused to let Gen. Vatsa and his family find peace.
“IBB is still troubling a dead man and his entire family,” he said. “People saw the end of our brother, but Babangida does not know how he will end.”
Vatsa concluded that the reactions of Nigerians following the book’s release reinforced the belief that Gen. Vatsa’s execution was driven by envy, malice, and hatred.
