Walmart has reached a settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice resolving a lawsuit that accused the retailer’s pharmacies of violating federal rules on the handling and dispensing of opioids and other controlled substances.
The Justice Department and Walmart confirmed the agreement in separate statements Friday. Neither side disclosed financial terms or other details of the deal. A joint stipulation dismissing the case was filed Thursday in federal court in Wilmington, Delaware.
In a 2020 complaint, the Justice Department alleged that Walmart repeatedly violated the Controlled Substances Act beginning in 2013. Authorities said the company failed to properly monitor and report suspicious orders and dispensed invalid prescriptions for controlled medications. At the time, officials indicated Walmart could face billions of dollars in civil penalties.
“The department is pleased to have reached a settlement with Walmart resolving allegations that its pharmacies failed to comply with their obligations under the Controlled Substances Act in dispensing opioids and other controlled substances,” a Justice Department spokesperson said.
Walmart said it was “pleased to resolve this matter and will continue supporting the exceptional work our pharmacists do every day to provide outstanding patient care.”
The settlement comes after Walmart’s 2022 agreement to pay $3.1 billion to resolve thousands of lawsuits filed by state and local governments over its alleged role in the opioid crisis.
The opioid epidemic has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 905,000 people died from opioid overdoses between 1999 and 2025, though annual deaths have declined since 2022. Opioid misuse and overdose remain a significant public health challenge.
