The Presidency has issued an apology following the publication of a federal appointments list meant to counter allegations of ethnic bias in President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
In recent weeks, President Tinubu has faced criticism over alleged lopsided appointments, with claims that he has favored individuals from his ethnic group at the expense of national balance. Among the critics is Senator Ali Ndume, a prominent APC lawmaker representing Borno South, who voiced his concerns during an interview with Arise Television.
Ndume accused the President of breaching the federal character principle, emphasizing that his loyalty to the APC does not exempt him from holding the President accountable.
In response to the backlash, the Presidency released a list outlining the number of appointments made across the country’s six geopolitical zones: 29 from the South West (the President’s home region), 35 from the North West, 25 from the North Central, 24 from the North East, 22 from the South-South, and 16 from the South East.
However, rather than easing tensions, the list sparked further criticism. Notably, it omitted key figures, including the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila—a significant appointee from the South West. Critics argue that the omission bolsters claims of regional imbalance and highlights the underrepresentation of the South East in the Tinubu administration.
Amid the growing backlash, Sunday Dare, Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication to the President, took to X (formerly Twitter) to acknowledge the mistakes and issue a public apology.
“We have noticed a number of errors in the list of appointments tweeted. We are sorry. We will provide an updated list later. Thank you,” Dare wrote.
Despite the apology, Dare did not offer an explanation for Gbajabiamila’s exclusion from the original document.
