Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has explained that the closure of Independence Bridge was necessary to prevent a potential disaster, as repair work was urgently needed.
However, he has apologized to residents for the severe traffic congestion caused by the decision, which left thousands of commuters stranded between Wednesday night and early Thursday.
In response to the gridlock, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, ordered the immediate reopening of the bridge to alleviate the situation.
Speaking to reporters during an inspection of the bridge on Thursday, Sanwo-Olu expressed regret over the hardship caused.
“First, I think it is important to apologize to all our citizens and Lagosians for the difficult and unfortunate experience of the past 24 hours,” he said. “As a government, both at the national and state levels, we take full responsibility for the inconvenience caused.”
Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the closure was done in good faith to prevent a looming disaster. “It was a necessary step to ensure public safety and avoid a future catastrophe,” he added.
