The Commissioner of Police in Benue State, Emenari Ifeanyi, has confirmed that two of the bandits responsible for the recent deadly attack on Yelewata community in Guma Local Government Area have been gunned down by security operatives stationed in the area.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday, CP Ifeanyi said one of the attackers was also apprehended and is currently in custody, cooperating with investigators and providing “useful information.” However, the suspect’s identity was not disclosed.
While local sources claim the death toll from the attack exceeded 200, the police put the official figure at 47.
The Police Commissioner noted that the bandits had attempted to overrun the Yelewata community but were repelled by the swift response of Police Tactical Teams and other security agencies.
He assured residents that the situation in Yelewata has been brought under control. According to him, additional police personnel have been deployed to vulnerable areas across the state on the orders of the Inspector General of Police.
CP Ifeanyi reaffirmed the commitment of the police and other sister security agencies to remain vigilant and prevent a recurrence of such tragic incidents.
