The Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) has accused Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, of undermining democracy through alleged repressive actions against members of the State House of Assembly.
At a press briefing in Abuja on Monday, the Centre condemned what it described as Governor Lawal’s undemocratic conduct, calling on President Bola Tinubu to declare a six-month state of emergency in Zamfara, similar to recent measures taken in Rivers State.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Ibrahim Yakubu alleged that the governor’s actions amounted to economic sabotage, fostering instability and anarchy in the state. He highlighted the 13-month suspension of 10 Assembly members, reportedly orchestrated by the governor, as a move to silence lawmakers who raised concerns about Zamfara’s deteriorating security situation. The Centre argued that this suspension had effectively crippled the state legislature, depriving residents of proper representation.
Furthermore, the group accused Lawal of authoritarianism, describing his alleged interference in legislative affairs as an abuse of power and a threat to democracy. It also raised concerns over his purported complicity in illegal mining activities, claiming that the governor’s inaction had enabled the exploitation of Zamfara’s gold reserves at the expense of the state’s economic stability.
“In light of these grave violations, President Bola Tinubu must act before it is too late. A state of emergency in Zamfara is now imperative,” the Centre stated.
The group insisted that a six-month emergency rule was necessary to restore order, dismantle alleged networks of political and economic sabotage, and reestablish democratic governance in the state.
“The current trajectory threatens not just Zamfara but the entire nation. The people of Zamfara deserve leadership that upholds the rule of law, prioritizes security, and safeguards national resources,” it added.
The CDD further urged the federal government to take decisive action to protect lives, secure the state’s resources, and hold those responsible for the crisis accountable.
“The time for half-measures and empty promises is over. Strong, swift action is required now. Governor Lawal’s administration has been an outright disaster—an assault on democracy, a violation of the rule of law, and an indifference to the suffering of his people,” the Centre asserted.
It concluded by calling for the governor’s removal, declaring that he had failed in his responsibilities and could no longer remain in office.
