The Chairman appears to be plumbing new depths in the mistakes he makes concerning the issues at hand. I do not know whether, beyond the attack dogs he has unleashed on those demanding accountability, the Chairman still has advisers around him who are willing to asvise him.
I received information this morning that the Branch has commenced the distribution of ₦50,000.00 to members who had submitted their details. I do not believe that proceeding with such disbursements at this time is proper.
The Chairman has still not told us how much is left from ₦100 million in question. At the same time, he has purportedly constituted a committee to investigate the expenditure of those funds. Much as I hold the view that allowing chairman to set up a committee to investigate his expenditure is wrong, and should be revisited, further disbursements from same account under scrutiny is wrong. Where, then, is the transparency?
Whatever remains of the ₦100 million ought, in my view, to be preserved intact pending the conclusion and publication of investigation. Continuing to spend from the fund while questions surrounding its previous expenditure remain unresolved risks undermining the very purpose and credibility of the investigation.
The proper course is simple. Disclose what has been spent backed up with statement of account, disclose what remains, allow investigations to run its course, and account fully to members before any further expenditure is undertaken from same money.
Regrettably, the Chairman’s present conduct does not demonstrate the contrition, restraint or transparency that the seriousness of this matter demands. Instead, it gives the troubling impression that the concerns raised by members are being treated with barbaric impunity.
